The C-Maske is a civil defense gas mask that is modeled after the military version, the GM-33. The difference between the earlier manufactured military issued GM-33 and the civil defense C-Maske is that the C-Maske is primarily a rubber construction and features a direct-thread filter canister (made in 1939 according to its stamping), while the GM-33 is a rubberized canvas and has a hose leading to the filter canister. The facepiece is made of rubber with metal assemblies holding the most likely triplex glass eyepieces in place (one eyepiece has a crack as shown). The valve house is made of metal as well and holds the "glitter" type exhale valve, which is on top of the 40mm intake. The mask features a five-point adjustable harness. The later, post war models are made of black rubber. The mask was made in Zürich by
FEGA (Feuer- und Gasschutz) Werk A.G.
1939 according to its stamping. The kit contained the facepiece, filter, carrying canister, anti-fogging soap, short manual and little piece of fabric. Anti-fogging soap, short manual and fabric piece are missing. These items were originally stored in the lid of the can. Mask and can show overall use and wear. The can has some surface rust as shown.
