HUDSON MAXIM - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 02/11/1907 - HFSID 279147
HUDSON MAXIM
Maxim signed this touching typed letter on his personalize stationery to a Maxwell in 1907, inviting him to a party, or rather
"a mass meeting to importune Father Time to slow down a little - at any rate not to try to break his own speed record each year with us as passengers."
Typed letter signed:
"Hudson Maxim",
1p, 7¾x10¼, on Maxim's personalized stationery.
1907 February 11.
In full:
"
My dear Maxwell:- We are going to have our little annual reception on Saturday evening, the 23rd instant, and we extend to you a cordial invitation, hoping that you may join us on that occasion. As the years go by it is necessary for us to take our annual accounting. The last few years have flown very quickly. Old 1906 in particular has apparently come and gone with the speed of an automobile at a cup race. Why this haste? I pro-pose a mass meeting to importune Father Time to slow down a little - at any rate not to try to break his own speed record each year with us as passengers. Either this, or let him run on without us, for I fancy few of us would have any objection to that. Let us, therefore gather together at my house on Saturday evening, the 23rd instant, to give him pause. There will be served on that occasion the same good old New England Brown Bread and Baked Beans that conduce to longevity, with wine and water from the fountain of youth. Hours from 5 till 12. Informal dinner will be served at 6 o'clock. Dinner will be followed by feats of intellectuality by the older ones which shall disprove and shame Oslerism, while the music and songs of the younger generation are expected to be so powerful and touching that they will stop the clock of Father Time. Please let us know at your earliest convenience whether or not we may expect you. Yours faithfully
,"
Postscript:
"
R.S.V.P.".
Hudson Maxim began his
career in armaments and explosives in his brother Hiram's gun factory in New England
. In 1888, he began
developing new explosives
and by 1890. Maxin invented a
new smokeless powder
. He helped his
brother found a dynamite and powder factory in New Jersey
that year: the following year, they parted company. In 1892, he began his own munitions factory in New Jersey, the heart of the United States' manufacturing at that time, where he
developed a smokeless cannon powder
. Maxim sold his company to E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company in 1897: however, he remained as a consulting engineer.
Later accomplishments include shock resistant torpedoes, delayed-action fuses and a propulsion substance fro torpedoes. These inventions greatly aided the Allied effort in World War I.
Machine guns manufactured by his brother changed the weaponry of warfare for all time. Lightly toned, stained and creased. Upper right corner is missing. Light tear in lower right corner. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically and unfolded. Otherwise, fine condition.
