    HIRAM GABRIEL
    BITHORN
    NACIDO EN SANTURCE
    1 DE 20
    BIOGRAPHY:
Bithorn played for the San Juan Senators and at age 22 became the youngest manager in the history of Puerto Rican winter ball. Soon enough, he was pitching at  Wrigley Field. On September 30, 1941, Bithorn was drafted by the Chicago Cubs and debuted in the Major Leagues on April 15, 1942, making history as the first Puerto Rican to play in the Major Leagues.
Bithorn won nine games and lost fourteen in his first season,
but he rebounded in 1943 by going 18-12 with an earned run average of 2.60 and completing 19 of his 30 starts, shutouts with seven, establishing a record for Puerto Rican pitchers that still stands. During this time, he also formed the first Latin American pitcher-catcher combination along Cuban Chico Hernández. After his second season, Bithorn fought for the United States military in World War II. His promising start, though, did not last once he returned from military service. By this moment his weight had risen to 225 pounds, which led to rumors that he may not have the same abilities.
Upon returning from the war, he returned to the Chicago Cubs, and went 6-5 in 1946. On January 25, 1947 he was purchased by the Pittsburgh Pirates only to be waived later. On March 22 of the same year, the Chicago White Sox selected him off waivers but only pitched two innings, developing a sore arm that ended his career. In four seasons, Bithorn had a 34-31 record with 185 strikeouts, a 3.16 ERA, 30 complete games, eight shutouts, five saves, and 509 innings pitched in 105 games (53 as a starter). Bithorn tried a comeback a few years later in the Mexican winter league. But on December 30, 1951, at age 35, he was shot by a police officer in Mexico.
He died later in a hospital. Initially, the officer claimed that Bithorn was violent and also claimed that Bithorn had said he was part of a "Comunist cell," but eventually this argument was debunked and the officer was sent to prison for Bithorn's murder.
Bithorn's achievement of making it to the majors remained a source of pride in Puerto Rico, and he was honored in 1962 when the biggest ballpark on the island was built and named for him. Hiram Bithorn Stadium is located next to Roberto Clemente Coliseum and across the street from Plaza Las Américas, and it also has hosted world championship boxing fights, the 1979 Pan American Games, and important musical spectacles. The Montreal Expos played 22 home games there in both 2003 and 2004. Rounds 1 and 2 of the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classics were played here including teams from Group C and Group D.

Since our young, 100% rice and beans raised Hiram Bithorn came into the Major League Baseball, world professional baseball has seen more than 252 of our Boricua Islanders belong to its ranks, a source of endless pride for all of us Puerto Ricans, for whom Baseball is and will always be one our favorite national sports. From Bithorn to Roberto Clemente to Orlando Cepeda to Alex Rodriguez, and many others, many of our Professional Baseball players have ended as umpires, trainers, and spotters of young prospects, around Latin America, specially in the Caribbean, helping raise the bar in defining equality and ending racial and cultural prejudice against minorities, while spreading an American borne, and one of America's favorite sports of all times to the world stage, even to places like modern Japan, where Baseball is king.  This medal here is part of a 20 medal series, which will honor the first Puerto Ricans to join the MLB, many of whom already served on the extremely competitive environment of the equally prestigious Negro Leagues.
    ANVERSO / OBVERSE:
The obverse shows the image and name of the Baseball player, along with the name of the town of origin and year the player was born. The number at the top of the home town is the turn number within the roster of Puerto Ricans who have made it into the Major League Baseball. To the right of the player is a branch of olive, simbol of victory, while to the lower left of the player is a line which tells with which Major League Baseball the player made it to the MLB, whether it was with the American or National League, and the year the player made it into the MLB.
    REVERSO / REVERSE:
The reverse, similar to all the medals of this wonderfully short and new collectable series, shows our first bilingual medal: It is in Spanish at the top, and in English at the bottom, all due to the importance of the accomplishments these players made while playing for the best American Baseball teams and their legacy left within the history of those teams, and to the cities to where the teams belong. Each reverse is flanked by two Puerto Rico flags, above which it tells about the medal series in Spanish.  Below, it reads: " Puerto Rico 2010 " and below is a baseball field, across which it says " Puerto Rican Legends (of the) Major League Baseball ".  It also states 24K GP (Gold Plate) & 1/100 (total mintage).
