FRED CHARTERS KELLY - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 08/15/1947 - HFSID 3753
    FRED CHARTERS KELLY
Busy writing his biography of George Ade, he hopes to visit Dayton soon and see "Uncle Orv". Kelly would later write the authorized biography of the Wright brothers.
    Autograph Letter signed:
    "Fred C. Kelly"
    , 1 page, 7¾x8¼
Rabbithash Villa, Peninsula, Ohio, August 15, [1947].
    To
    "Dear Fitz"
    [almost certainly Roy G. Fitzgerald],
    in full:
"I'm buzzing with curiosity to know how you ever found out that I am a wonderful public speaker, for I supposed I had kept it a secret. It would be great fun to be there, especially at the Forest Ave address, but malheureusement I am under tremendous pressure to get the Ade biography done by Labor Day, which is goint to hustle me even though I work nights and on the Lord's Day; and then I must go East to keep a date for a converence with an editor. So my soul is not my own until around September 15. I'll be in Dayton before long for a visit with you and Uncle Orv and we'll take up various matters and topics. Dayton, of course, was 'the city' in my childhood. The girls there seemed more broad-minded that they were in my home town. Thanking you for the compliment, and with warm regards to all Fitzes, Faithfully".
    Fred Charters Kelly (1882-1959)
was an American humorist, columnist and biographer.
His Washington, D. C. column, "Statesmen, Real and Near" (1910-1918) was the first syndicated column from the city.
Kelly bought and operated a farm in Peninsula, Ohio, from which he did free-lance journalism and completed several books. The earliest of these were financial advice, including
How to Lose Your Money Prudently
    (1933), but his
greatest success was as a biographer. He wrote
    George Ade: Warm Hearted Satirist
    (1947) and edited
Miracle at Kitty Hawk: The Letters of Wilbur and Orville Wright
(1951). A personal friend of Orville Wright, he secured the return of the original 1903 Wright Flyer from London to the US.
Although containing only a partial date,
this letter was certainly written in 1947. The Ade biography was published late that year, and Orville Wright died on January 20, 1948.
    The
    letter's recipient was almost certainly
    Roy G. Fitzgerald
(1875-1962), who represented the Dayton area in Congress for ten years (1921-1931), securing Wright Field, now Wright Patterson Air Force Base, for Dayton. Fitzgerald was also a pilot, a friend of Orville Wright and an outspoken advocate of aviation. Multiple folds. Tape on top right corner. Small tear on bottom right corner. Toned. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
